Umeshu, also known as plum liqueur, is a Japanese liqueur made with ume plums steeped in sake, shochu or any white alcohol and mixed with sugar or honey. It’s a tangy and sweet beverage with an alcohol content of about 10-15%, depending on the producer. It became a popular drink in Japan sometime around the 17th century and is rapidly gaining in popularity worldwide. Because of the seducing aroma, well-balanced acidity and sweetness of ume fruit liqueur, umeshu is said to be one of the most delicious liquors in the world and has rightly taken its place next to Sauterne, Port and Tokaji on beverage lists of famous restaurants and bars.
Umeshu can come in many styles like nigori (unfiltered), genshu (undiluted), sparkling and koshu (aged), and can be enjoying in a variety of ways – from being served on the rocks, straight well-chilled, a frozen slushy (mizorezake) or in cocktails.
